a) Entry Requirements & Qualifications

Here are the minimum academic qualifications required in order for you to pursue a degree in Dentistry, as set by the Malaysian Dental Council.

Important Note: A degree in Dentistry is highly competitive, so you may be required to pass an interview before you are offered a place.

b) How Does Your Education Pathway Look Like?

A degree in Dentistry is typically 5 years long.

Thereafter, you will need to complete one year of compulsory service either in the private or government sector. Subsequently, you’ll need to pass the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) before you can become a registered dentist and practise dentistry in Malaysia.

After that, you will gain clinical practice for 2 years before specialising in fields such as orthodontics, paediatric dentistry and periodontology. The process of specialisation usually takes 4 years.

In short, it generally takes about 7 years to be a fully registered dentist from SPM and another 6 years after that to become a specialist.

A degree in Dentistry is at least 5 years long and is generally divided into 2 parts.

Part 1, which is approximately 2 to 2.5 years, relates to pre-clinical training that is set in an academic environment.
