After a successful debut last year, the 2019 Extracoffeenery Carnival — a collaborative effort between Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and SJK(C) New Kopisan — returned with a blast on 11 August 2019, taking centre stage at SJK(C) New Kopisan.
The carnival was held to promote the coffee at New Kopisan, Gopeng, a town that, in spite of its name, did not have a single coffee tree until four years ago.
Perak State Executive Council for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Tan Kar Hing, was present to officiate the opening ceremony. “With the rise of technology today, conventional ways of promoting local attractions may no longer be relevant. There has to be new and creative ways to promote local tourism,” said Tan. He applauded the efforts of all parties in encouraging local tourism and provided a sponsorship of RM5,000 on behalf of the Perak state government.
The event saw a large crowd participating in an exciting line-up of activities, which included a treasure hunt, coffee workshop, frisbee training camp, drama performance and fun and food fair. Many of the activities were carried out by UTAR students from various faculties.
It is with great hope that through events like this, we can promote local heritage and build lasting social networks among the community.
