On 3 April 2019, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) received glad tidings from the Times Higher Education (THE) and learnt that it is one of the top 9 universities in Malaysia that has made it to the first Times Higher Education University Impact Ranking list.
According to the rankings, UTAR is placed in the 101-200 bracket for the overall THE University Impact Rankings 2019, worldwide! The ranking is based on the university’s social and economic impact that ties in with the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.
THE has recognised UTAR because of the university’s effort to do good for society and fulfil a number of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) such as Quality Education (ranked 45), Reduced Inequalities (ranked 70) and Gender Equality (ranked 101-200).
Upon the good news, UTAR president, Prof Datuk Dr Chuah Hean Teik expressed that the university is glad to be ranked in this bracket. He also added that a survey conducted by the university found that 50% of its students were actually the first person in their families to enter a university.
“In that sense, we are contributing to reducing poverty and improving the quality of life of poor families,” said Dr Chuah.
UTAR’s ranking demonstrates their commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals through its teaching, research and knowledge transfer. EduAdvisor congratulates UTAR for its good work and we look forward to seeing more Malaysian universities being ranked in the future.
