23 Things to Cross off Your Student Bucket List Before You Graduate
Are you getting the best college or university experience? Make the most of your flexible schedule with these #YOLO ideas for students.
Updated 08 May 2019
Your time at college will be one of the most memorable experiences in your life, so why not make the most of the years while you’re still able to? After all, #YOLO, right?
Here are some bucket list ideas to inspire you to do just that!
#1. Go on a food trip around Malaysia
Depending on where you start your journey, it is possible for you to eat your way around Peninsular Malaysia within a week (if you stick to just the popular places). With so many states offering specialities, you’ll roll back to campus happy — but 10kgs heavier.
Think soft and silky tau fu fah in Ipoh, satay celup in Melaka, Penang’s endless food offerings, Johor’s fish balls… you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice!
#2. Unwind on a beach vacation
With so many beautiful, white sandy beaches around Malaysia, you and your mates won’t have to worry about breaking the bank visiting our tropical islands. Consider breathtaking islands such as Redang, Perhentian or Tioman for a relaxing weekend of sun and sand.
#3. Attend a campus party
They’re not the best (no alcohol, ugh), but any excuse to attend a party, right?
#4. Stay out till the wee hours of the morning
Make the most of your youth by enjoying night outs with your friends — while you still have the energy. Once you start working, the only thing you’ll look forward to on a Friday night is sleep.
This doesn’t mean you have to visit bars or clubs. Your evening plans can involve anything your heart desires, including late night rendezvous with friends at the mamak, driving up to Gasing Hill to check out the Petaling Jaya skyline or taking a drive to experience the Kuala Lumpur city lights at night. Just remember to stay safe!
#5. Binge-watch a TV series during a semester break
Staying at home the whole day catching up on shows you’ve been meaning to cross off your must-watch list? Sign us up!
#6. Actually achieving a grade you were aiming for in an exam
If you’ve always fallen short of the grades you actually want, now’s the time to study hard for your next exams. There’s nothing worse than completing your degree but wishing you could go back and do it again to get better results.
#7. Skip an entire day of class for no reason
Sometimes, you need a break and that’s okay. Spend the day off doing whatever you want — but don’t make it a habit!
#8. Go for lunch with your favourite lecturer
Not only is this a good way to bond with your lecturer outside of the classroom, it also makes for a great networking opportunity. You will soon come to realise that lecturers aren’t all they appear to be — they’re just as human as you are.
#9. Make the most of student discounts
From discounts on movies and karaoke to price slashes on gadgets like the latest Macbook, student benefits are aplenty. So don't forget to use your student privileges while you still can! Once it's gone, you'll be moaning about having to pay full price.

Start now#10. Dye your hair an outrageous colour
If you’ve ever wanted a crazy hair colour, now is the time. Once you enter the professional working world, even a streak of blonde in your luscious black locks may receive side-glances and disapproving looks from HR.
#11. Go to a rave
Okay, maybe not a rave (because that was soooo 2015), but there are many options including the annual Good Vibes Festival, Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) and even ZoukOut Singapore!
#12. Spend time with family
This might sound boring, but once you look back on all your family vacations and outings, you’ll be glad you participated.
As soon as you start working, you’re likely to be extremely busy (say goodbye to flexible schedules) and will have to fight with your colleagues to take time off, especially during festive seasons. As a result, you might find it hard to balance work with your social life and family time in the future.
#13. Take a class that has nothing to do with your degree/major
While compulsory classes earn you that degree, taking up classes you have genuine passion for will feed your soul. Not only will you gain new skills and knowledge but you’ll also have fun!
#14. Blatantly fall asleep in class
Because who can go through the lecturer’s 83-slide presentation at 8am?
#15. Steal something (insignificant) from campus
What better way to look back on your rebellious college days than to glance at the lone traffic cone stolen from campus grounds sitting in the corner of your room?
#16. Visit your friend at another campus
A change of scene can be a refreshing experience, especially if you’re looking to switch up your study environment.
#17. Take up a semester abroad
Depending on the programme you are enrolled in, you may be able to study a semester abroad.
This is a great way to make the most of your university days as you will get the best of both worlds — the opportunity to experience a new culture without having to spend too much or be away from your family for too long.
#18. Plan a staycation
An affordable alternative to a beach holiday vacation is to have a staycation in the city! Various Airbnbs offer cheap accommodation across Malaysia while the Bamboo Village offers you a vintage, no-frills kampung-style stay right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
#19. Take up a voluntary internship during your semester break
Semester breaks are a good way to get a headstart on gathering work experience before graduating, as there are plenty of things you can learn from an internship. Alternatively, you can take on a part-time job to help you gain first-hand experience of what the working world is like.
#20. Have a sleepover
Spending long hours at the mamak can be costly, so why not switch it up and host a sleepover with a bunch of friends? Whether you choose to order pizzas and and have a movie marathon or simply play board games and chat the whole night, this will definitely be an evening you and your friends would look back on.
#21. Lepak at the airport at night
Somehow, the food at KLIA’s McDonald's tastes different than anywhere else.
#22. Book flight tickets for a spontaneous trip
Does hanging out at the airport make you want to drop everything and take the next cheapest flight? Do it — nothing beats a quick, unplanned trip with some pals, to a place you’ve never been before!
#23. Watch a movie on campus using a classroom projector
If you and your friends find yourself bored out of your minds in between classes, sneak into an unused classroom, hook a laptop up to the projector and watch a movie or two. Consider it an affordable cinematic experience — just bring your own snacks.
These ideas aren’t for everyone as they are only meant to inspire you to make the most of your university experience. Ultimately, you should only do what you’re comfortable with and don’t be pressured to do things because of your peers. Stay safe and have fun checking off your bucket list!
