Three teams from the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) have made it to the semi-finals of the L’Oreal Brandstorm 2022, an annual international innovation competition where young creatives from all over the world come up with innovations for the beauty industry.
The competition, now in its 30th year, sees contestants battling it out in three tracks — Inclusion Track which aims to empower inclusive beauty; Green Track which calls for inventions relating to sustainable beauty; and Technology Track which looks at beauty personalisation via tech.
This year, participants also benefitted from a tailored exclusive learning experience consisting of masterclasses and mentorship through an e-learning platform developed by L’Oreal and empowered by Salesforce, a worldwide leader in the digital ecosystem.
Representing Malaysia as winners of the national competition, UNM’s three teams — Team Pil, Team Spectrum and Team Overachievers — are now competing to win a fully-paid 3-month intrapreneurship trip to the L’Oreal headquarters in Paris.
As part of the judging process, the semi-finalist teams have submitted a video of their project and it’s now open for the public to pick their favourite innovative projects.

Their innovation is the PIL technology, a concentrated pill that can be transformed into a regular bottle of liquid shampoo within 5 minutes. This technology will reduce carbon emissions, lower logistics and packaging costs and reduce the consumption of plastic bottles.
