Do you have a TikTok account? Why not make good use of your time with these educational accounts?
Updated 29 Jan 2021
Are you on TikTok? Well, if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon, you probably should!
More than just home to dancing videos and funny memes, the platform also hosts plenty of educational content that’s highly engaging due to its short video format.
So, if you want to start learning something other than dance moves, here are some cool TikTok accounts that you should follow.
#1. Get calculative with @mathswithmisschang
Mathematics is not easy but thanks Miss Chang, you won’t have to do it alone.
Do you need help converting metrics? Struggling with quadratic equations? Miss Chang’s TikTok channel covers it all. A simple browse of her account reveals countless videos covering solutions and nifty tips to make math easier.
And you know what’s the best part? Instead of simply recording herself talking about the solution, she actually shows the steps on paper. This makes it easy to follow even for those who aren’t big fans of mathematics.
#2. Experiment with @chemteacherphil
Tired of reading lines and lines of chemical equations off a book?
It’s time to close that book and experience the real thing with Phillip Cook, a high school teacher who spends his time creating chemistry content on his TikTok page.
The best part of chemistry is the chemical reactions and Cook certainly knows this. His account consists mainly of his many experiments. In one video, he shares how you can create copper from aluminium foil. In another, you can see him demonstrate the property of the very reactive alkali metals.
Cook’s TikTok can be a refreshing change for students needing a break from their chemistry textbooks. While you won’t see him show the exact chemical equation on paper, you will get to see the reactions come to life, making it more relatable when you come across it in your textbooks.
#3. Love your body with @instituteofhumananatomy
Want to brush up on your human anatomy? The Institute of Human Anatomy (IOHA)’s TikTok account is a great place to start.
Instead of illustrations, the private lab actually uses real human cadavers in their videos. In one video, you can see them explaining the components of the brain while holding an actual brain. In another, you can see them talking about the pinky finger, with a dissected finger to accompany the explanation.
It’s quite macabre and may not be for everyone but no one can fault their dedication to authenticity. If you’re a medical student eager to learn more about the human body, you can do no wrong with IOHA.
PRO TIP
Love learning about the human body? You should consider a future in medicine.
#4. Discover a world of knowledge with @discovery
According to their TikTok bio, the Discovery team has one goal in mind — to bring the world to you. And if you’ve been following them, you’ll see that that is exactly what they have done.
Similar to their TV channel, the Discovery TikTok page is home to many facts ranging from history, wildlife all the way to politics. From just one page, you can learn about the unsung heroes of world war 1, the origin of Halloween and chonky bears.
Packed in bite-sized videos, it’s a great place to just chill and pick up a new, random piece of knowledge for the day.
#5. Brush up on your syntax with @knoxstudy
Do you ever find yourself confused by the difference between advice and advise? Well, Laurie Knox is here to help.
Learning a language is never easy. While it cannot substitute a real language class, Knox’s TikTok page helps you deal with everyday confusion like when to use “anymore” vs “any more” and why your usage of “your” may be wrong.
It’s a quick and easy way to pick up new language tips. So while you’re busy scrolling through all the dance videos, why not give Knox a visit every now and then?

Start now#6. Take a trip to space with @neildegrassetyson
Yep, you heard it right. The world-renowned scientist is on TikTok. And his account is not just for space fans. He hosts a variety of content, including but not limited to history and pop culture, as well as the occasional science tidbits.
It’s not like a proper class and you definitely should not expect him to teach you your science school syllabus. But if you ever need clarification about some science fact you may have heard — is there really water on the moon? — Tyson’s account is the place to go.

#7. Read your own mind with @drjuliesmith
Okay, so you can’t actually read minds with psychology — but getting to know how your brain works can be the next best thing.
Dr Julie Smith is a psychologist who, in her free time, spends countless hours producing psychology content for her TikTok followers. You can find anything from how to know if someone is flirting with you (wink wink) to how you can be more productive even if you’re stuck in your home.
So if you ever need a pick-me-up or a little advice to get you through the day, Dr Julie’s TikTok page is here for you.

#8. Keep your gums healthy with @drsylvialim
If you’re looking for more info on how you can keep your gum healthy, Dr Sylvia Lim is a great account to follow.
While it can’t substitute for a real dentist appointment, you can still find plenty of useful advice about oral health on her TikTok. She mostly shares about braces but she also covers topics like how to stop grinding your teeth and the proper way to deal with tooth decay.
Sometimes, she even sings out her knowledge. Where else can you find a singing dentist?
#9. Know your biology with @iqbalahyar
Chemistry isn’t the only thing you can find on TikTok.
There’s a ton of biology content on TikTok and you can thank fellow Malaysian TikTokker, Iqbal Ahyar, for that. A visit to his account will teach you about the spiders that bury themselves, the real truth about vaccines and pretty much everything science-related.
He probably won’t cover the topic in your textbook but his passion for the subject will definitely remind you of its exciting nature. Who doesn’t get excited learning about cannibal pineapples and real-life Pokemons?
PRO TIP
If you’re fascinated with the world of biology, bioscience is the perfect place for you.
